I have a Windows 10 Home digital license which came from the free upgrade path from a retail version of Windows 7 Home. As far as I remember my Windows 7 Home license allowed the software to be installed on 3 different machines. I understand however that Windows 10 digital licenses appear to be tied to the hardware on which they are installed and don't seem to allow installation across multiple machines or at least it is not obvious. I have downloaded the Windows 10 installation media onto a USB flash drive and have installed in on a new laptop however the activation options I am given relate either to a hardware change on my older laptop or to purchase a copy from the Microsoft store.

My activated copy on my original laptop states that my digital license is linked to my Microsoft account so I assumed by signing in as this on the new laptop during install that it would somehow pick up the license. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. From what you say I understand that I could move my license to a new machine but could not run it on multiple machines at the same time as per my original Windows 7 license.

I wonder if i could still install my original Windows 7 from DVD with the original license key on my other two machines? Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. Search the community and support articles Windows Windows 10 Search Community member. Good day all!

I hope you are all well. Neither of these are what I want. I just want a fresh install on my new laptop. Can someone please let me know the following: a If I can install my copy of Windows 10 with a digital license across multiple machines b If so how? Super thanks for your time.

DaveM Independent Advisor. Hi Timmy It is true, a Windows 10 licence is for one PC only, there is no Windows 10 licence equivalent to that Windows 7 Family licence that was indeed for 3 devices.

If, at the time when they were giving out the free licences to Windows 10, you had upgraded 3 PC's you would have ended up with 3 Windows 10 licences, however the free upgrade period ended 3 years ago and that will no longer be possible. Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. Hi Al. It's true that the Digital License is tied to the present hardware, but you should also be able to move it to another PC since the license inherits the same rights and restrictions as the original Windows 7 retail license which can move PC's.

It is possible to do yourself if you'd previously signed in with your Microsoft account and it linked to the Digital License as shown in Status at top of the Activation Settings page. Then when you change motherboards, you'd sign in again and run the Troubleshooter. We recently learned it will even make an exception for OEM if all else is proper.

So that's your best bet. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved. This license set up makes it very expensive to run a number of machines on Windows 10 at home. I'll try the support links - thanks. Thanks for the response. Have a good day! You can try it. But for three activations for a Windows 7 Product Key three years after the free Upgrade it may be a challenge that requires someone from Support who is willing to do this.

I'm not sure why you'd feel duped about not getting three free copies of WIndows 10 based on a WIndow 7 Family pack you bought years ago, especially given that it's now three years after the free Upgrade expired. They have made all kinds of exceptions and are exceptionally generous - even allowing OEM licenses that were never allowed to leave the same PC to transfer to entirely new motherboards - so maybe they will allow claiming two more free licenses based on using the Family pack key.
